Old Town Square

Site: Old Town Square and Planks Car Park, Old Town, Swindon
Client: Joint venture between Swan Hill & Langdale Estates
Accommodation: a mixed use of shops, restaurants, work units, offices and residential.

Although bordered to the north by a terrace of eighteenth century and replica buildings, and the Old Town Hall and Bell Tower to the south, the Old Town Square is undefined and open to the east, except for a large Copper Beech. The only definition of the Square is the painted lines on the tarmac car park.

The scheme proposed to extend the scale and style of the Old Town Hall in an L-shaped facade abutting the Bell Tower on the southeast corner, thus defining the east and south sides of the Square. By limiting the roadway to the Planks carpark to pedestrians, accessed by archways through the new facade, the new Square would be re-surfaced and landscaped in the style of a French Square with a border of paving stones outlining a pattern of tree planters, bollards, sets and bound gravel surfacing. Restoration of the Town Hall for restaurant use would be augmented by ground floor commercial use in the new buildings with residential units at first floor providing natural surveillance over this focal public space for Old Town.
