one acre island site at the confluence of the river Frome and Rodden Brook.
The remains of three mill buildings of 16th, 19th and 20th centuries had been badly vandalized, resulting in two being roofless, floors destroyed , few remaining windows and fire damaged and unstable structure.
This group of buildings was listed by Mendip District Council and the restoration work has been undertaken with their encouragement and some grant aid for repairs.
The south mill, internally rebuilt after a fire in 1906, has been converted to a residence for the owners, with a publishing office at the first floor entrance level. Flood liability necessitated occupancy of the upper levels only. The water turbine at ground level has been restored to working order and adapted to generate electricity, making the building energy self sufficient with excess sold to the National Grid.
New work has been limited to external steps at the entrance, three new window openings, minimal internal partitions and a cantilevered internal stair extension . These elements retain the open space within while providing views across Rodden Meadow . The repair and recasting of existing iron windows and the retention of floors complete with sack hoist and grinding stones gives the original building legibility while the design of the new work forms a counterfoil.
